LSU 77, Vanderbilt 69: If it’s not one thing it’s another

Vanderbilt couldn’t stop turning the ball over.

On Saturday, Vanderbilt took care of the ball and lost to an Alabama team that shot the crap out of the ball.

On Tuesday, Vanderbilt lost to a team shooting 3-of-16 from three because they couldn’t stop coughing it up. A 20 percent turnover rate isn’t absurdly high — it’s a number that Vanderbilt has topped four times this season, for instance — but it’s high enough that this team probably isn’t going to win if they’re doing that. Meantime, they’re not generating extra possessions via grabbing offensive rebounds, either.

All that is how you score 69 points in 75 possessions while shooting reasonably well. The defense continues to be a sieve, too; again, LSU averaged more than a point per possession with a poor shooting performance and basically no offensive rebounding, because they didn’t turn it over. And they rank 239th nationally in turnover rate.

Oh, yeah, and Jordan Wright scored 15 points on us.

  • That performance by Ezra Manjon should be good enough. That it’s not should tell you about where this team is.
  • Ditto Ven-Allen Lubin, who’s missed a bunch of time to injury.
  • Tyrin Lawrence... meh. He’s supposed to be the best player on the team and he consistently hasn’t been that since returning from injury.
  • This wasn’t a bad performance from Evan Taylor, and Carter Lang did his thing, but guys playing 16 and 10 minutes shouldn’t be the fourth- and fifth-most impactful players on the team.
  • Jason Rivera-Torres is going to have games like Saturday, and he’s going to have games like this. That’s just the nature of a freshman, I guess.
  • Paul Lewis just hasn’t given the team quality minutes off the bench this season and I can’t really explain why.
  • JQ Roberts had played three minutes, total, over the previous four games and somehow played 10 last night?
  • Tasos Kamateros when the shots aren’t falling, well...
  • No, I don’t know why Jordan Williams is starting for this team, either.
  • DNPs, aside from the obvious Colin Smith and Lee Dort, were Malik Presley and Isaiah West, and I think the latter is still hurt.

What’s Next

Ole Miss in Oxford at noon on Saturday. The Rebels beat Florida 103-85 tonight. This should be fun.
