Anchor Drop, December 6, 2023: The NCAA is considering doing something smart?

For once, college sports’ governing body is getting out in front of something.

Good morning.

Optional Musical Accompaniment

I’ll admit that the short blurb made me have a kneejerk reaction against this:

But, yeah. Actually, The Athletic explains this in a way that makes it sound a lot better — at least, a lot better if you accept the coming “super league” (however you want to call it) as something that’s more or less inevitable. Because basically the entirety of the last 40 years or so, since the schools sued the NCAA over television rights, have been the NCAA just standing against stuff that was inevitably going to happen.

Instead, though, Charlie Baker decided that he wanted to get out in front of the walking antitrust suit that was coming (no, a relative handful of schools can’t just break away and bar the door from competition, now that we have an administration that actually believes antitrust enforcement is a thing) and try to create something that more or less gives the caucus threatening to break away what they want, but in a way that allows anybody to opt in instead of just letting ESPN and Fox decide who the biggest brands are.

I mean, TV money’s still gonna be a thing, of course, and The Casuals will dictate who television networks want to show. But if some goofy rich guy decides he wants to throw a bunch of money at his alma mater so they can sports good, then Ohio State and Alabama can’t take their toys and go home. I guess that’s how this is supposed to work anyway.

In other news, well, this guarantees that we won’t hear him as an analyst on Vanderbilt games next fall.

Oh yeah, and if you still care about these things, the men’s basketball team hosts San Francisco tonight at 7 PM CT on the SEC Network+. Let’s see if the comments can win!
