Anchor Drop, December 19, 2023: Western Carolina tonight

Never say it can’t get worse. It can always get worse.

Good morning.

Optional Musical Accompaniment

Vanderbilt men’s basketball, 4-6 on the season and fresh off getting drilled by Texas Tech in Fort Worth on Saturday, returns to Memorial Gym tonight where they’ll host Western Carolina at 6:00 PM CT on the SEC Network. Western Carolina is 8-2 on the season (albeit with only one game against a Power 5 team and one game against a Top 100 KenPom team, and those are, respectively, Notre Dame and McNeese) and KenPom actually has the Catamounts favored in this game. So yeah, this can get worse.

If you really want a sense for how bad things have gotten, KenPom’s algorithm now has Vanderbilt going 8-23 and 2-16 in the SEC, and only has the Commodores favored in one game the rest of the way (a December 30 home game against Dartmouth.) Meanwhile Chris Lee is on his podcast sounding like Vanderbilt might not make a coaching change unless they go 0-19 or something, and commenters the other night were discounting the likelihood of that happening.

In other words, well, we might be about to find out the answer to this.
