Reports: Vanderbilt to hire New Mexico State OC Tim Beck

No, not THAT Tim Beck.

Syndication: The Montgomery Advertiser Jake Crandall / USA TODAY NETWORK

All right, so this seems to be official:

First of all, this isn’t the much-reviled former Texas and Ohio State offensive coordinator Tim Beck, who’s now the head coach at Coastal Carolina. This Tim Beck has spent the last two years as New Mexico State’s offensive coordinator. New Mexico State jumped from 22.6 ppg in 2021 to 25.5 and 28.7 in Beck’s two seasons in Las Cruces (that 28.7 for 2023 doesn’t count tonight’s 10-point outing in the New Mexico Bowl if only because I’m not entirely sure Beck was calling the plays in that game, given that he was reportedly in Nashville yesterday afternoon.) New Mexico State also averaged 427 yards per game and 7 yards per play in 2023.

“But Tom, that was in Conference USA!” Yes, and when they played a paycheck game at Auburn on November 18, it was 414 yards of total offense and 31 points. And New Mexico State’s best recruiting class in the last four years ranked 97th in the 247 Sports composite.

Prior to the two years at New Mexico State, Beck was an offensive analyst for a season under Gary Patterson at TCU; prior to that, he was on the staff at Division II Pittsburg State, his alma mater, for 33 years (!), the last ten of those as head coach. Beck went 82-35 as head coach, by the way.

Anyway, this isn’t a splashy hire, but it seems solid. Now let’s see if we can find a quarterback...
