Anchor Drop, December 1, 2023: No news is good news?

I guess if we don’t have anything new, that’s probably good?

Good morning.

Optional Musical Accompaniment

After several days of players entering the transfer portal, coaches getting the ax, and whatever the hell that basketball game was on Wednesday night... well, it’s probably a good thing that the most newsworthy thing that happened to Vanderbilt athletics on Thursday was multiple football players, including sophomore linebacker Langston Patterson, announcing plans to return to Vanderbilt next season.

(I’m going to go curmudgeon for a minute. Why is it even newsworthy that guys who have eligibility remaining are returning? Why is this something we announce on social media now? It’s starting to feel like entering the transfer portal is the default setting and if you’re just returning to your current school, you have to announce that?)

The Hustler wrote about Vanderbilt’s future at quarterback, which is actually entirely about the transfer portal (though I agree with that.) But in other future quarterback news, Vanderbilt’s two 2024 commitments faced off in the state championship game, with Jeremy St-Hilaire’s Chattanooga McCallie team beating Whit Muschamp’s (yes, son of Will Muschamp) Chattanooga Baylor team. I will also point out that it is extremely on-brand for Vanderbilt to have both the quarterbacks from McCallie and Baylor coming in next season.
