Good morning.

Optional Musical Accompaniment

Vanderbilt football’s offseason got off to a roaring start with four players entering the transfer portal yesterday. In addition to Ken Seals, linebacker Ethan Barr and offensive linemen Kevo Wesley and Barrett Maddox announced that they’re done at Vanderbilt:

I can’t say any of these are surprising. Seals, Barr, and Wesley are all getting their degrees and moving on; Barr had the clearest path to playing time next year but even that was a bit iffy with him probably getting overtaken by Langston Patterson. Wesley barely played, appearing in 17 games with one start over four years. Maddox didn’t play at all as a true freshman and was probably another year or two away from contributing.

And then there’s a different version of “has (probably) played his last game at Vanderbilt,” courtesy of the men’s basketball team:

I have no words.

Andrew Wilf wrote his final Commodore Brunch column for the Hustler yesterday and, well, I guess I have an entire offseason for them to rope me back in.

I predict Vanderbilt to pick right back where it left off in 2022 and make a strong push at a bowl appearance in 2024. Before turning the page, let’s look at what Vanderbilt needs to clean up to go where it wants to be. It’s been a privilege and honor to write these columns and I am grateful to have learned from the Sports Editors before me in Simon Gibbs, Justin Hershey and Bryce Smith.

Bold prediction.
