2023 APR Bowl Sweepstakes!

Hey, you happenin' hetwetters! It's time again for the best event in sports -- the African World Cup qualifiers! But when you're not busy watching Guinea-Bissau vs. Liberia, college football's D-level bowls are pretty great too. The only thing that makes them even better is when some 5-7 school slips inside an open boxcar like a hobo, and makes away with a prestigious trip to Detroit or Boise.

Well, this season has 82 available bowl spots. By my count, 67 teams have qualified, and another 25 are still in contention. And then there are Jacksonville State and James Madison, who have six wins but are ineligible unless enough teams don't make it.

Let's run down who's left, and see what this week's rooting interests bring! 1990s HTML, ENGAGE!

Army vs. Navy Both at 5 wins
December 9, 3:00 PM CBS TBD

13th team

So here's a summary of how things will pan out:

  • If 16 or more teams win, Army gets left out even at 6-6, due to having two I-AA wins.
  • If 15 teams including Army win, the Black Knights get the final spot.
  • If 13 win, James Madison and Jacksonville St. both get spots.
  • Anything under 13, and we get JMU, JSU, and 5-win bowling goodness.
So no 5-7 teams this year, presuming Jacksonville St. and James Madison are allowed in.
