Austin Martin Traded to Minnesota

That’s a hell of a price to pay for a 1.5 year pitcher rental.

Today is the MLB Trade Deadline, and some dumb moves are about to be made. This, I respectfully submit, will likely be the dumbest in the long run:

The Toronto Blue Jays won the draft when they got A-Mart at pick #5 overall last year. They paid him just north of $7 mil for his signing bonus (i.e. they paid him like the #2 overall pick, which he should have been, but Baltimore is not known for making wise decisions).

Beyond that, Toronto was aggressive with him, placing him right into AA, which is rare, even for advanced college players. This season with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (which is just a top notch minor league name), A-Mart has slashed .281/.424/.383, was named to the Futures Game, and is in the top 25 prospects in all of baseball in every prospect rankings list. In short, this is a guy you don’t trade, even if your lineup is as loaded as the Jays.

...and yet, they did, along with RHP Simeon Woods-Richardson, for one and a half years of Twins RHP Jose “La Makina” Berrios. Now Berrios (7-5, 3.48 ERA) is a good pitcher, and at 27, was likely the top young pitcher on the trade market. As such, he was going to command a haul. The Twins certainly got one.

I’ll let you know the bonus number when I know it. Root for a really high number. One around $7 million likely means Davis Diaz, who the Bags chose in the 12th round, will be wearing gangster pajamas. If somehow the Bags get a deal... say $6-6.5 mil... then get a bit nervous.
