Saturday Winner’s BracketGame Thread: Vanderbilt vs. Atlanta

New, 113 comments

6pm CT ESPNU. Two SEC teams enter; one stays in the winner’s bracket; one has to play the winner of The Larry Birds vs. Them Hose. This is not as catchy as the sub-header to this afternoon’s elimination game.

NCAA Baseball: Nashville Regional-Presbyterian at Vanderbilt Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Winner’s Bracket Game: Saturday June 5th 6pm CT on ESPNU

#1 Vanderbilt Commodores (41-15, 19-10 SEC)

vs.

#2 Atlanta (30-23; 21-15 in the ACC)

On the Mound

Vanderbilt #22 So. RHP Jack “Leits Out” Leiter (8-3, 2.28 ERA)

vs.

Atlanta #8 Fr. RHP Marquis “Monseigneur” Grissom, Jr. (1-2, 6.49 ERA)

Snap Analysis and Predictions:

Vanderbilt will be favored in this one (duh), as we are the National Seed and have a top of the first round talent on the mound, but Atlanta is no pushover. Their bats carry them, so Leiter will have to have his A game tonight. Also, both Leiter and Grissom are the sons of former major leaguers. Only one is the son of an all star pitcher, however.

Offense: You all know about #42 So. 3B Justyn-Henry “Ricky-Bobby” Malloy (.290/.426/.539 with 16 2B 1 3B 10 HR 39 RBI and 4-5 stolen bases). The former Dore is leading the ramblin’ wreck in HR and RBI (though not by much). He was named 3rd Team All-ACC third baseman this year. Beyond that, the Ramblin’ Wreck slashed .283/.375/.459 on the year.

The Dores have slashed .301/.390/.509 2021 and put up an easy 10 runs last night against them Hose. Beyond that, we’ve got the clear power advantage, belting 80 HR to Atlanta’s 62. Though we will likely be without the Tater (was wearing a brace on his wrist after sliding in headfirst to 2nd in a hustle play that was not exactly needed given the context of the game). Offensively, his absence likely won’t impact the game as much as it will on the defensive side (where he’s a gold glover at 2B in the making). Corbs will likely slide Parker Noland over to 2nd and bring in the thunderous, though mercurial bat of Jayson “Gonzo” Gonzalez (as he did when Tater exited last night’s game).

Advantage: Vanderbilt.

Pitching: Come on now. The Ramblin’ Wreck of Atlantans have a team 5.80 ERA. The Dores have a team 3.49 ERA. Leits Out (2.28 ERA) will be on the mound, whereas they counter with the son of a speedy former MLB CF (6.49 ERA) who only has only started 6 games this year and has only one collegiate win.

We used three pitchers last night, and all but the starter only pitched an inning, and, as such, would be available tonight if we need them. None of the relievers (Schultz and Smith) are our closer or setup man (though Smith certainly pitched like that last night, giving us basically three closers moving forward). They used 5 pitchers last night, including their Ace (Hurter), nominal day 3 starter (Crawford), and their closer (Bartnicki) threw 2 IP, rendering him all but unplayable tonight. Do you really need me to get all granular here? The pitching advantage we have in this one is about the same as the pitching advantage we had against Them Hose.

Advantage: Vanderbilt.
