Anchor Drop, February 2, 2021: Groundhog Day

Ah, a metaphor for Vanderbilt sports in 2021.

Good morning.

Optional Musical Accompaniment

It’s Groundhog Day, and no, I’m not going to go see whether Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning (because, really, does anyone want to know that we’re going to have six more weeks of winter?) Anyway, the 1993 film of the same name seems a fitting metaphor for Vanderbilt athletics in 2021.

That, of course, excludes baseball, which had four players (Kumar Rocker, Jack Leiter, Spencer Jones, and Isaiah Thomas) recognized as preseason All-Americans by Baseball America. That also excludes soccer, ranked in the top five of the country according to Top Drawer Soccer. Ah, hell, that excludes both golf teams, women’s tennis, and women’s bowling... you know what, this is really just a metaphor for the football and basketball programs right now.

Okay, men’s tennis added Lipscomb to its schedule for Saturday, after a previously-scheduled matchup against Drake was cancelled.
