There’s a decent chance that last week’s 30-28 win over UConn will be the last we see in the 2021 season. Vanderbilt has a record of 2-3 after that game, but things only get more difficult from here and that starts with today’s matchup with the Florida Gators.
Florida is 3-2 and maybe a couple of plays away from being 5-0. The Gators were a failed two-point conversion away from probably going to overtime with Alabama, and Kentucky needed a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown to beat Florida 20-13 last Saturday.
Vanderbilt’s last visit to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was hideous; the Commodores lost 56-0 in one of the more pathetic performances of the Derek Mason era. There have been a few recent games in the series that have been reasonably competitive, though, including a 9-7 Florida win in 2015 in which Florida needed a late field goal to prevail, and of course there was James Franklin’s 34-17 win over Will Muschamp in 2013. But that game represents Vanderbilt’s only win over Florida since 1988, and one of just two wins that Vanderbilt has ever enjoyed in Gainesville — the other was in 1945.
Have fun, expect to win. Anchor Down.
