So, here it is, Vanderbilt facing the second-worst team in the SEC (per SP+), but on the road and against a team they haven’t beaten in the last twelve tries.
South Carolina is in a similar boat to Vanderbilt, with a first-year head coach inheriting a program that’s a bit of a mess, coming off a 2-8 season. Granted, one of those two wins was 41-7 over Vanderbilt in Nashville last season, and the Gamecocks still have a roster dotted with four-star recruits (and even one five-star recruit.) That’s a quite different situation than the one Clark Lea walked into, and it’s reflected in the fact that South Carolina has been a bit more competitive thus far in SEC play. The Gamecocks are 0-3, sure, but they managed to only lose 40-13 to Georgia and also lost 16-10 to Kentucky. Then again, Tennessee blew them out last week by a 45-20 score that was closer than the game actually was.
So, I guess Vanderbilt has a chance today. Have fun, expect to win. I’ll probably be out for the first half (DNP, wife scheduled something during that time) and I’ll also be, uh, watching the Astros game on another screen.
