Anchor Drop, July 25, 2020: The Hits Coming, Again

Ah, okay, time for Joe Rexrode to drag Kirkland.

Good morning.

Optional Musical Accompaniment

So, the summer of our discontent... continues. This time it’s Joe Rexrode at The Athletic, interviewing mostly disgruntled former athletic department employees. Really, a lot of this isn’t exactly new information — the dysfunction within the athletic department has been fairly obvious since around the time Malcolm Turner was forced out in February, if not before that. But this part, well...

“Those numbers may seem like a lot,” the source said. “And maybe it’s a little far-fetched. But the tennis facility, where we have a top program in the country on the women’s side, is awful. It needs another court just to host NCAA Tournaments. The swimming situation is awful. Lacrosse. So add that to the obvious projects and we had a lot to do. I think Malcolm saw so much potential, saw a gold mine waiting to explode. I think he had all the right intentions. He was personable. Malcolm came in and was very vulnerable and led from a place of ‘Hey, I’m learning and I want you guys to help me learn.’ … I thought he had the best vision of what Vanderbilt could be.”

Tennis? Swimming? Lacrosse? Well, they really know how to get our attention.

And speaking of the women’s tennis program, here’s an interview with new head coach Aleke Tsoubanos.

In sad news, Thanh Anderson, one of the captains of Vanderbilt’s 1986 football team, has died at the age of 54.

And finally, I would like to watch the comments section burn, so here is a Hustler editorial about why the Vanderbilt student group Abolish Greek Life is wrong.

Here’s your full MLB schedule, for those of you who have MLB.TV. I’m not sure what the Free Game of the Day is. Andrew will, of course, have your daily open thread for MLB games later. I would encourage the rest of you to use this thread as your open thread for the Russia Cup, Major League Lacrosse, and Mexican soccer. (For the record, it is my understanding that Costa Rican soccer starts on August 16.)
