Saturday afternoon brought a new commitment from a familiar place.
Tyson Russell, a cornerback from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, announced his commitment to Vanderbilt on Saturday. For those unfamiliar, St. Thomas Aquinas is a perennial powerhouse in Fort Lauderdale that’s produced six current Vanderbilt players (plus LaShawn Paulino-Bell, who played for the Commodores in 2019 but isn’t listed on the current roster.) Russell’s 247 Sports page lists offers from Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Missouri, and Syracuse, in addition to a few more Group of 5 and FCS offers. 247 rates him as the #93 cornerback prospect in the Class of 2021 and the #154 prospect in Florida; Rivals has him as a three-star recruit.
Russell is the fifth commitment in Vanderbilt’s 2021 class, and his addition moves Vanderbilt into 61st place in the Rivals team recruiting rankings. 247 hasn’t updated its rankings to reflect the commitment yet, but the Class Calculator feature indicates that Vanderbilt would move up to 57th with the addition of Russell.
