Saturday Open Thread: College Football is Back

I mean, Vanderbilt football isn’t back. But there are football games on today.

NCAA Football: Colgate at Army Danny Wild-USA TODAY Sports

If you have seen the countdown in the daily Anchor Drop (which wasn’t published today, because it’s Saturday and I am lazy), you know that our countdown is now at seven days to Vanderbilt’s season opener.

But in terms of actual, real, live college football that countdown ends today at 11:00 AM CT. Villanova plays at Colgate in what we believe is the first official NCAA football game of the 2019 season. That game will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.

Then, at 2:00 PM CT on ESPN, Youngstown State plays at Samford in the second game of the season.

At 6:00 PM CT, also on ESPN, we get to the first FBS game of the season, and also the first game played by an SEC team when the Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes play their season opener in Orlando.

And finally, at 9:30 PM CT on CBS Sports Network, Arizona travels to Hawaii in the traditional Week 0 game thanks to NCAA rules allowing an extra week of the season for teams that play at Hawaii. (The Florida-Miami game was given a waiver to the normal rules for reasons that aren’t entirely clear, but probably have to do with Disney and ESPN and shadiness.)

So have an open thread for your Saturday. And yes, we’re putting this up now because we know you care far more about Villanova-Colgate than Florida-Miami.
