Anchor Drop, August 19, 2019: 12 Days to Kickoff

Good morning.

We are 12 days away from Vanderbilt football’s season opener against Georgia. Two players wear #12 for the Commodores. Redshirt sophomore LB Brayden DeVault-Smith started one game last season and made eight total tackles; not bad for a local kid whose other offer was Tennessee State. Sophomore QB Jack Bowen is a walk-on who’s like fifth on the depth chart, I assume.

Vanderbilt rising senior golfer John Augenstein led for most of the way in Sunday’s final at the U.S. Amateur, but fell late to Georgia Tech’s Andy Ogletree by a 2 and 1 final. Oh, well: Augenstein still qualified for both the Masters and the U.S. Open with his second-place finish. And, of course, there’s a national championship to go for.

Vanderbilt soccer ended its preseason with a 1-0 win over Memphis on Saturday. Peyton Cutshall scored the Commodores’ lone goal in the 75th minute.

Another football scrimmage report from Saturday.

Here’s Derek Mason after Saturday’s practice:

And, somebody has decided to paint over the coaches’ mural on West End Avenue, apparently permanently.
