Drake “Safari Planet” Fellows becomes the 2nd Vanderbilt Commodore taken in the 2019 draft (JJ Bleday went #4 overall to the Marlins), as the San Diego Padres chose him in the 6th round (pick #173).
The Planet had an impressive junior year, as he went 12-0 with a 3.87 ERA in 100 innings of work. Primarily a power pitcher (fastball & slider), Fellows had a 10.53 K/9 ratio, averaged 6.25 Innings per start, and repeatedly bested the top SEC arms as Vanderbilt’s Friday starter. He got better as the year went on, as well, throwing a 116 pitch complete game against An Ohio State University in the opening game of the Nashville Regional.
It will be interesting to see if San Diego has him work on a third pitch, or puts him in the pen with an eye towards fast-tracking him to the majors.
Today, we celebrate. Tomorrow, we get back to work.
