Anchor Drop, June 22, 2019: 70 Days to Kickoff

Hello, Vanderbilt is in the College World Series final.

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Louisville vs Vanderbilt Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning.

We’re 70 days away from Vanderbilt football’s season opener against Georgia, the least important news of the day, and there’s no #70 on the roster so we’ll move right past that and move on to...

Ah, yes, the Vanderbilt baseball team is on to the College World Series finals after beating Louisville 3-2 on Friday night. Mason Hickman shut down Louisville, then Jake Eder came in and, uh, stupid things happened to give Louisville a 2-1 lead. And then Louisville’s Luke Smith did this after striking out Julian Infante to end the top of the 8th inning:

Can’t confirm, but I’m 99 percent sure there’s a “fuck” in there. Smith came back out for the 9th, walked JJ Bleday, got pulled for a relief pitcher, and then Vanderbilt scored two runs and Tyler Brown nailed the door shut in the bottom of the 9th.

So, here’s what happens when you throw an f-bomb at an opposing hitter on the best team in the country with three outs left in the game, and said best team in the country comes back to win: you officially become an Anchor of Gold meme.

And now, Vanderbilt will play Michigan in the first game of the best-of-3 championship series on Monday night at 6:00 PM CT. That’s right, a Big Ten team is playing for the championship in baseball. That sound you just heard was Paul Finebaum’s head exploding.
