NCAA Tennis Brackets Announced

Both the women's and men's bracket for the NCAA tennis tournaments were released today. The first round is this weekend, although matchup times haven't been announced yet. Let's see who Vanderbilt plays!

EDIT! I'll stick the match times, live stats and video links at the bottom, for the eight of you who clicked this.

First up: The women's bracket!

Vanderbilt finished 16-7 (10-3 SEC), and earned the #8 seed overall. Much like the baseball tournament, Vanderbilt will host a four-team regional. If that win that, they'll host a super regional next weekend.

  • #8 Vanderbilt vs. Miami of Ohio (12-10, MAC champion)
  • Ohio State (19-6) vs. Georgia Tech (12-12)

This is basically a clone of last year's regional, with the Buckeyes, a .500 ACC team, and a no-hope automatic qualifier. (Last year it was Clemson and Alabama State.) Georgia Tech was the #5 overall seed last year, so they might be more dangerous than their record would suggest.

Miami of Ohio finished 12-10, despite being both the regular season and conference tournament champion. That's a sign of high-quality MACtion.

Should Vanderbilt win both games, the super regional matchup would be either #9 Texas or 22-7 Texas A&M. The Aggies actually defeated the Commodores 4-2 in College Station last month.

Elsewhere, in AOG-worthy action:

  • 20-7 Wake Forest takes on Austin Peay, the only team still undefeated at 22-0. (The winner of that will face #1 overall seed Georgia in Athens.)
  • Tennessee takes on 26-1 Furman, and I think you know what to do here.
  • And 18-4 Princeton vs. 15-10 Northwestern in the ceremonial HURR NERD FIGHT matchup.

As mentioned above, if Vanderbilt makes it to Orlando, their quarterfinal matchup would be #1 Georgia (or, God willing, Austin Peay or Wake).

And now, the men's bracket!

Unfortunately, nothing particularly stupid jumped out at me in the men's bracket. Tennessee Tech did get in at 10-13, and got shipped off to #2 Texas, so I guess that's kinda fun.

The men's team got sent to Columbus, home of the #1 overall seed.

  • Vanderbilt (15-11) vs. Notre Dame (17-14)
  • #1 Ohio State (29-2) vs. Cleveland State (19-7)

Maybe Cleveland State will be annoyed they were technically seeded lower than Tennessee Tech? I mean, I wouldn't bet on an upset by the Fightin' Pea Vikings, but anything's possible.

(This logo is amazing. Who would be stupid enough to get rid of such a logo?)

If Vanderbilt should pull off the upset, they'd likely be matched up against the Ivy League in another HURR NERD FIGHT special. The Columbia Lions finished 17-3, and earned the #16 overall seed.

And speaking of amazing logos, let's talk about the lion Columbia used in the 1960s:

Easily the top three college logos of all time, along with the Vanderbilt star-V. (Credit to sportslogos.net for the original uploads.)

...look, I said there wasn't anything stupid about the men's bracket. I didn't say I wouldn't type anything stupid, OK? I don't know how to not type anything stupid.

And that's about it, I think. All hail Pinman.
