When it comes to the state of the Vanderbilt football program in December 2019, no news is good news. There is news today, and you can infer that because there is news, it’s bad.

Jordan Butler had been the fourth-highest-rated recruit in Vanderbilt football’s Class of 2020, per the 247 Sports composite (and we should point out that one of the three ahead of him, Donovan Kaufman, recently picked up an offer from Florida State, and we usually know how that ends.) Butler took an official visit to Northwestern over the weekend and committed to the Wildcats today, leaving Vanderbilt in the dust.
It’s bad. It really is. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt has all of twelve players committed in the Class of 2020. Part of that is a reflection of the fact that there are few seniors on the team, but still.
