Good morning.

Vanderbilt soccer plays Alabama in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament today at noon; this is the first game of the tournament for the second-seeded Commodores. Today’s match will be televised on the SEC Network.

And also tonight, Vanderbilt women’s basketball opens its season hosting Jacksonville State at Memorial Gym at 7:00 PM. That game will be on the SEC Network+.

On Monday, Aaron Nesmith was named to the second team of the coaches’ Preseason All-SEC team.

There’s also an update on former Vanderbilt football players in the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers are currently 8-0 while starting Justin Skule at tackle for the last six games, surprising no one who watched Vanderbilt football for the last four years.

VandySports has a new podcast with Mitch Light (full disclosure, I haven’t listened to this one yet so I can’t tell you about it.)

Greg Arias calls Vanderbilt’s quarterback situation “troubling.” Which... yeah, that’s an understatement.

Off the West End

College basketball season starts tonight. (Not for Vanderbilt, but still. This also means Joe Lunardi did his “latest” Bracketology projection, which is silly because literally zero games have been played.) The big draw is the annual Champions Classic, the very arrogant name that Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, and Michigan State have assigned to their annual doubleheader, but it’s finally back for those of us who not-so-secretly prefer basketball to football. Parlagi might even be able to recommend a good NAIA game.

Ah, yes, here’s a national college football writer arguing that the ACC needs Florida State to be good. This is kind of like arguing that the SEC needs Florida to be good: yeah, probably, in terms of national perception, but it’s far more fun for them to be bad.

I am not going to mention this. I am not going to mention this. I am not going to mention this.
