Birmingham Briarwood Christian ATH JR Tran-Reno Commits to Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt picks up its third commitment from the state of Alabama.

NCAA Football: Georgia at Vanderbilt Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

A couple of weeks ago, Vanderbilt had just picked up its second commitment in the 2019 recruiting class. On Tuesday night, the Commodores picked up their fifth in two weeks with the addition of J.R. Tran-Reno from Birmingham (AL) Briarwood Christian. Tran-Reno is the third commitment from Alabama in this year’s class.

Listed at 6’1” and 200 pounds, Tran-Reno ran a 4.56 40-yard dash and has a 40-inch vertical jump (according to his Hudl page.) He looks good on film, and yet he’s just a three-star recruit according to both Rivals and 247 Sports — the latter of which lists him as the #68 prospect in the state of Alabama. And his best offer, aside from Vanderbilt, was... Memphis? Southern Miss? Western Kentucky?

Anyway, here’s his highlight tape. You judge for yourself.

It’s not clear what position Tran-Reno will play in college, which might be the problem — his size and speed combination would seem to be a good fit at RB, but he could also play WR. We’ll see. Anyway, we like all the anchors dropping of late.
