Derek Mason’s modus operandi on the recruiting trail in recent years has been to start slowly and then have a flood of commitments around camp season in June. Tonight might have been the start of that, with Memphis (TN) Christian Brothers DL Christian James announcing his commitment via Twitter.

James, listed at 6’4” and 250 pounds, is rated as a two-star recruit by Rivals. The 247 Sports composite is more bullish, rating him as a three-star and the #88 weakside defensive end prospect nationally, and 247’s own in-house rating considers him the #21 overall prospect in the state of Tennessee. James’ offer list isn’t the most impressive, though he did pick up a Northwestern offer last month.
The main question is just where James fits into Derek Mason’s 3-4 scheme. It’s possible he could bulk up and play on the defensive line, but he could also transition to outside linebacker.
