NCAA Football: Vanderbilt at Missouri Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning.

Vanderbilt’s 2018 football season opener against MTSU is now 99 days today. Wearing number 99 for the Commodores this year: redshirt freshman defensive lineman Stone Edwards (who’s not pictured above; that’s former Commodore Landon Stokes in the picture.) Edwards is listed at 6’5” and 245 pounds on the official roster, though that hasn’t been updated to reflect a year in the weight room, and as a true freshman from Hillsborough, NC, he didn’t play in 2017. Coaches like the upside of the former three-star recruit, though.

Vanderbilt men’s golf opens the NCAA Championship today at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The six-day event will feature four rounds of stroke play running through Monday, with the top eight teams advancing to a two-day match play event for the championship.

Astra Sharma and Fernanda Contreras advanced in the individual event of the NCAA Championship, both in the singles and doubles portion.

Men’s basketball announced a couple of nonconference games for the 2018-19 season. The Commodores will play at Oklahoma on January 26 as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. They will also meet NC State in Miami on December 1. Both Oklahoma and NC State made the NCAA Tournament in 2018.

Off the West End

The Houston Rockets won Game 5 to go up 3-2 on the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals. On both ends, we’re one game away from the NBA Finals that the NBA doesn’t want (the one that doesn’t involve either the Warriors or LeBron.)

Around the SEC: Darren Kirkland Jr. is transferring from Tennessee, and Kentucky DB Marcus Walker picked up some Fulmer Cup points for the Wildcats.
