Bryce Drew got a new addition to the Vanderbilt basketball program on Thursday afternoon. Matthew Moyer, who announced last month that he would be transferring out of the Syracuse basketball program, announced via Twitter that he would continue his college career at Vanderbilt.
Moyer redshirted during the 2016-17 season, then averaged 3.2 ppg and 3.4 rpg as a redshirt freshman last season on a team that made the Sweet 16, appearing in 35 games and starting 20 while averaging 16.8 minutes per game. He also shot 57.9 percent on two-pointers, though he didn’t play a major role in Syracuse’s offense.
The real reason to like this, though, is that Moyer may still have some untapped upside. He has good length and athleticism at 6’8” and 220 pounds, and Rivals ranked him as the #40 recruit in the Class of 2016 — a sign that, whatever you think of his performance at Syracuse, scouts like his potential. Sometimes guys like this really were overhyped, but sometimes it just takes a while to find themselves.
Moyer should have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2018-19 season.
