One of the nation's top basketball recruits may land at Vanderbilt

Frankly I expected Tom to write about this. The fact that he hasn't makes me think it's less likely than the stories suggest, but, for what it's worth, there are a bunch of stories that suggest we're in the running for someone named Darius Garland, who is apparently the nation's top point guard prospect.

Per ESPN Insider:

Then there’s Vanderbilt, the hometown option. But in Garland’s case, the hometown option isn’t simply on his list for perception purposes. Bryce Drew has the Commodores deeply involved in Garland’s recruitment, and there was plenty of pre-summer buzz surrounding the idea of Garland staying home and playing at Vanderbilt.

Frankly, I don't think he'd be all that good for Vandy, and I hope he goes someplace else on his list, other than Kentucky. I say this not because I know anything bad about him, but he's clearly a one-year player and I don't ever want to see one of those on our team.

From a quasi-moral standpoint, they make an absolute mockery of the idea of actual student-athletes, and from a practical standpoint, I don't see the point spending such a large part of the program's recruiting time and budget on a guy who, under the best case scenario, will leave you back where you started a year after he arrives.
