With Derek Mason and staff conducting camps this week, the staff has been evaluating and extending offers to prospects they like. And that's led to a flood of verbal commitments. The latest one comes from Midland (TX) ATH McLane Mannix, whom 247 Sports reported as a commitment on Thursday.
He played last year at Midland Christian before transferring to Midland High, which is a 6A school. Here's a highlight tape from his junior season at Midland Christian, where he apparently lined up at RB and WR, and also played some defensive back and served as a return man:
Mannix is undersized to function as an every-down running back, but his speed -- he's been clocked as fast as 10.91 seconds in the 100 meters -- should play well in multiple roles at Vanderbilt. Rivals hasn't rated him yet, 247 Sports doesn't have a composite rating for him yet -- though the site's own ratings list him as a three-star and the #88 prospect in the state of Texas. ESPN likewise hasn't given him a rating yet, but does note that he ran a 4.49 in the 40-yard dash.
And aside from all of that, we have to admit he has a cool name.
Anchor Down, Mannix.
