Vanderbilt football will face a familiar opponent to fill out its non-conference schedule in 2022 and 2023. The university announced on Friday that the Commodores will renew their rivalry with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in a home-and-home series.
The two programs have met 16 times since 1954. Vanderbilt has won 10 of those matchups, including the last three. The Commodores escaped Winston-Salem by the grace of Jordan Matthews the last time these teams played. Vandy needed this fourth-and-11 catch from the SEC's leading receiver to set up a game winning field goal in the 23-21 victory:
The two teams were scheduled to meet again in 2014 and 2015, but Vanderbilt was forced to cancel the series when the SEC dictated the Commodores close out their regular season against arch-rival Tennessee. Vandy replaced the Demon Deacons with Charleston Southern in 2014, and then nearly lost to their FCS opponent.
