Better Know an SEC Opponent: the Georgia Bulldogs

New, 31 comments

Georgia is already dead to us after failing to protect a 17-point lead against Tennessee.

NCAA Football: Georgia at South Carolina Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

The School: The University of Georgia

Record: 4-2 (2-2 in the SEC). That includes a two-point win over Nicholls, a team McNeese State defeated by 25. Per tradition, Nick Chubb has waited to blow out his knee until after playing the Commodores. This is great news for Florida.

Ranking: No. 26 in the AP Top 25 and No. 27 in the Coaches' Poll. The formulas have UGA rated 35th in the Real Time RPI and 46th in Warren Nolan’s power index. But, uh, Western Michigan is No. 7 in Nolan’s rankings, so maybe don’t take that one too seriously.

Mascot: This ball of labored breathing and daytime naps.

It looks like someone melted a larger, better dog.

Location: Athens, Georgia. Basically Asheville, NC with fewer drum circles.

Coach: Kirby Smart, who ended Georgia’s recurring nightmare of 10 win seasons and trips to the Capital One bowl when he replaced every lazy writer’s favorite “hot seat” topic Mark Richt this winter. Richt won 145 games in 15 seasons at UGA. At his current pace, we’ll have an NFL franchise on Mars before Derek Mason could match that total (approximately 2056).

Conference: The S-E-C! They’re a founding member, so we can’t kick them out for infractions like allowing Tennessee’s magical start to the season to continue or the baffling continued employment of Mark Fox.

All-time vs. Vanderbilt: 55-19-2. Eeeeugh.

In the Last 10 Years vs. Vanderbilt: 8-2. That includes a 2006 win in Athens that represented the Commodores’ first road win over a ranked opponent since the Peloponnesian War.

The Last Time We Saw These Guys: Let’s just say Derek Mason’s average margin of defeat against the Bulldogs is an even 22 points and leave things at that.

Do They Run the Triple Option?: No, but they ran for 326 yards last week against the Gamecocks and have six different players averaging 5.3 yards per touch or better. I’m not ruling anything out.

Is Vandy Favored?: Are they ever against Georgia? (+14.5 this week).

Most Potent Offensive Threat: Nick Chubb has been moderately human this season. His 5.5 yards per carry are a career low. However, he bounced back in a big way against a tough South Carolina defense last week when he sprang for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In his career, he’s carved up Vandy for 267 total yards and 9.8 yards per carry.

Most Potent Defensive Threat: Outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter is a terrifying 6’6 pass rushing monster who leads the team in sacks and quarterback hurries this season. He also plays the cello!

Matchup to Watch: Regular game Kyle Shurmur vs. two-minute drill Kyle Shurmur. The latter has been way more effective than the former, and Vanderbilt is going to need to prop up some semblance of a passing game if Ralph Webb’s injury affects him for the rest of 2016.

Interesting Fact: Famous UGA alumni include Ryan Seacrest, the guy who played Newman on Seinfeld, bloviating idiot Ralph Reed, and one of the greatest professional wrestlers to ever grace the earth:

If Georgia wins, we: let the numbness wash over us, like a warm tide slowly carrying our tortured bodies out to sea.
