MLB Draft Signing Watch: UPDATE - Wilson Signs With Cubs

The weekly update on who signed and for how much. The signing deadline is July 17th. Until then, we keep hope alive.

**6/26 Update: Deal is a reported $1.3 million.  Approximately $800,000 over slot.

**Update**: Darryl "D.J." Wilson Signs with the Cubs on an over slot deal (exact terms unknown).  It was reported a few hours after I wrote the article below.

See this tweet from Cubs beat writer Mark Gonzalez:

Of the 315 players picked in the top 10 rounds of the 2015 MLB draft, only 55 remain unsigned (15 in the first round and supplemental first round). In the week since Nolan Watson signed a $1,825,000 deal with the Kansas City Royals, all 6 Vanderbilt players and 3 commits chosen during these rounds are still unsigned, accounting for 16% of the unsigned picks (27% of the first round).

A healthy portion of those unsigned picks are players who went to Omaha, and have consequently not been focused on contract negotiations.

More fun with numbers: Only 16 players from U.S. High Schools picked in the top 10 rounds are still unsigned.  Of the 16, 3 are Vanderbilt commits (19%).  Does this mean anything?  Well, it certainly does not mean nothing...

I still expect most, if not all of the players chosen in the top 10 rounds to sign with the teams who chose them, but it is particularly encouraging that only one of our 2015 commits has signed a deal when most in their situation have long since agreed to terms.

I'll be checking in on this weekly until July 17th.
