Big 12/SEC Challenge Matchups Set: Vandy Basketball Heads to Texas

New, comments

Vanderbilt will get the chance to avenge a 2013 loss when they travel to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The trip will allow players like Damian Jones and Jeff Roberson a chance to return to the state where they played AAU ball.

Whether you're in Austin or Nashville, you'll want to circle this date: January 30th, 2016.

That's when the Big 12/SEC Challenge gets underway. The annual showdown will bring the Vanderbilt Commodores west to face the Texas Longhorns in a high profile non-conference matchup. These two teams should both be trending upwards after losing only two seniors apiece from their 2014-15 squads. While Texas will have to deal with the loss of Jonathan Holmes (heh) and Vandy will be without glue guy James Siakam, there's a good chance that this matchup will pit a pair of top 25 teams against each other in the dead of winter.

The trip will also be a quasi-homecoming for Vanderbilt's Damian Jones, Jeff Roberson, and Carter Josephs. Jones grew up in Baton Rouge, but he played his AAU basketball with Dallas's Texas Titans. Roberson is from Houston, and Josephs is from San Antonio. While none of those locations are especially close to Austin, it's a safe bet that all three players will have family and friends in attendance.

Here's the Big 12/SEC Challenge lineup in full. All games will take place on the 30th:
