Vandy Football Recruiting: Commodores Add 4-Star ATH Alontae Taylor to Start 2018 Class

While they may not have an opponent on the schedule this week, the Commodores added a major piece to the 2018 Class when 4-Star ATH Alontae Taylor announced his verbal commitment Tuesday evening.

On Tuesday, Vanderbilt reeled in a major recruit...who won't get to campus for another three years. Four-star athlete Alontae Taylor made the decision to commit to the Commodores yesterday.Taylor currently plays for nearby Coffee County Central HS in Manchester, TN, and is Derek Mason's first commit for the class of 2018. Taylor announced his decision in two separate tweets:

What followed was a series of Tweets from the coaching staff, most noticeably Coach Derek Mason himself (assuming this is about the commitment, of course)

Current Class of 2016 commit and soon to be early-enrollee QB Deuce Wallace even joined the excitement around #Vanderbilt on Twitter, which was absolutely fascinating to read:

Taylor is rated a 4-star prospect, according to 247Sports, and is rated as a Top-5 player in the state of Tennessee. Mason and his staff sent a major message about the way they plan on recruiting going forward; from state borders out, not the other way around.

Going forward as the time for the class of 2018 approaches it will be interesting to see how many of the "traditional" programs that have previously enjoyed recruiting success in the state of Tennessee will try to come in and pry the Commodores of their prized 2018 commit. Taylor committed to the 'Dores over an offer from Troy, but was seeing significant interest from schools such as UNC, Clemson, and tennessee.

Saturday, our weekly recruiting update will dive further into the film of Alontae, as well as detailing recent offers, visits, and any other buzz we at AoG have acquired since the last update.
