The Sound You Heard Wasn't Cowbells.

It was the death knell of the season, if it hadn't already been rung.

Last night's "game" - noncompetitive as it was - served a pretty big purpose in that it highlighted just how far Vandy has fallen in comparison to other teams. The last two years, for example, VU and State were vying for berths in the same bowls - State came out ahead both times. Now look at the state of both programs: one in the National Championship picture, the other struggling to beat FCS schools, AT HOME no less.

For all the public criticism of Karl Dorrell, whose offense was at its worst last night, Mason's vaunted defensive scheme allowed State to score its highest point total of the season. (Accounting for the fumble return for a touchdown, VU defense still gave up 44 points, 2nd most by an SEC team against State this year.)

On the radio last week prior to the game, Mason told Joe Dubin and Greg Pogue that the team wasn't going to worry about what State would do, but rather would just play its game - I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it. 99% of teams don't have the luxury of just playing its own game and having a chance to win - great coaches (or even decent ones) draw up a game plan to beat the specific team on the other side of the ball. If it doesn't work, they make adjustments. Mason, Dorrell, and company flatly refuse, instead throwing quarterbacks to the wolves and blaming the players. How can Mason say he has't lost the team when, in week 1, it was clear he didn't have them, either?

I have 25 years of being a VU fan, and was indoctrinated during Watson Brown's 1-10 team in 1989. I've never been more disappointed or embarrassed to wear my black-and-gold than I am in this team.
