When Vandy turned down the Orange Bowl

A little historical perspective as we all lament the Gator Bowl's snub of a Vandy squad with its best SEC record since 1935: That's year's 7-3 team blithely rebuffed an invitation from the one-year-old Orange Bowl.

In the throes of the Great Depression, the university could not shake loose the spare change it would cost to put the team on a southbound train. If the players were disappointed, Tennessean reporter (and later Banner columnist) Red O'Donnell didn't seem to notice as he covered the team banquet, 77 years ago this week.
