Let's hope his source was wrong.
On my rainy drive into work this morning, Mark Howard stated on 104.5 the Zone that he had a "first-hand" credible source, confirmed by the two other hosts, that told him that Tommy Tuberville had expressed interest in the head coaching position at Vanderbilt, yet was rebuffed by the powers that be. Please let that not be true.
Please. I mean, it's not like he has any recruiting connections to Middle Tennessee.......
Oh, wait...........
Damn.

Being played?
Is anyone else getting the feeling that we may be getting played again by Franklin? I was doing some reading yesterday (because work is overrated, right?) on the Maryland Athletics blog and I felt there may be a possibility that Franklin is trying to scare them into saying Friedgen’s contract will expire as normal. We have to remember that he supposedly turned down a NFL job to stay at Maryland. He wants the Maryland HC job.
I am starting to think this too.
Everything I’m reading is how much Franklin loves UM and wants to be the head coach there. I wouldn’t put it past Maryland to “renegotiate” that coach-in-waiting agreement.
If Franklin was REALLY into the Vandy job and wanted to take it, why hasn’t something been done or said yet? When both sides are on the same page, deals like this should be done fast.
I’m scared to think of where Williams will go if Franklin bows out.
Yes
With Pitt’s job going to the guy from Miami of Ohio or wherever, you have to think that either 1) Franklin is trying to get a guarantee (above the current $1 million) from Maryland or 2) Vanderbilt is still looking at other options.
As for the Tuberville report, at this point I’m done believing rumors in the media. I’m pretty certain that I could report that Vanderbilt is close to a deal with Jeff Fisher and it would be on The Washington Post and 104.5 by noon.
I'm scared
What will the list of candidates look like if Franklin says ‘no’? I highly doubt Roman will want to be involved with this train wreck at this point.
Here's the list Jeff Lockridge reported
- James Franklin (Maryland OC)
- Greg Roman (Stanford OC)
- Todd Graham (Tulsa HC)
- Don Treadwell (Mich. St. OC)
- Shawn Watson (Nebraska OC)
Keep in mind this list is a week old now, so it may as well be written on papyrus.
I’m pretty sure Todd Graham wasn’t that interested and that Shawn Watson has been eliminated and is no longer being considered (even despite our inability to seal the deal so far).
Haven’t heard a peep about Don Treadwell since the supposed finalists list came out.
Roman pulled out of the process, though it appears Vanderbilt may still be in contact with him at this point.
Of course, we are actually all about seven levels deep in Robbie Caldwell’s dream. He has us all thinking this is our reality when in fact he’s still coaching the football team. Soon we will all die and descend into his limbo. /Inception’d

I didn’t think Roman pulled out. I thought the news (all during the Malzahn ordeal) was that Roman had been told we were filling the position.
VCDW sure sounded like he hasn’t made a decision yesterday, but that also could be because he’s not betting on Franklin.
I don’t believe Franklin will be able to get a renegotiation of his HCIW contract because I’ve read that the new AD there doesn’t believe in them and thinks they are not in the university’s best interest.
All I have to say is ‘08 Vandy vs Auburn was the most poorly coached game by any superior team I’ve ever seen. All AU had to do was hand it off to Ben Tate every play, and they woulda ran us out out of Nashville. If I remember correctly, they managed something like five yards rushing in the second half, while in the first half there was absolutely no stopping Tate. It was really quite an accomplishment to F up a gameplan so magnificently. However, having said that, I think Tubberville on the sidelines next year lends itself to signifcantly more credibility than having a James Franklin pace back and forth.
We’ll see how everything plays out. When a figure like 3 mil/year gets out in the press, its obviously going to start calling a lot of attention, and I think we’re seeing some interest we might have otherwise been unable to garner.
haha yes.. thinking outside the box
I think its time to nix the HC position.. Do we really need it? Do it like flag football in middle school: have Rodgers outline with wis finger the receivers’ routes on the center’s belly while everyone stands around the huddle. Then on defense just have the players call what position they wanna play and whom they’re going to guard. I know when I play my pickup games, we always have like 8 safeties, and that always seems to work out okay.
hell..
UTK and LSU rarely have 11 players on the field, and they seem to be doing okay.

Tennessee averages 11
They like to save a player for later now and then so they can use 13 when the big plays come up.
Speculation
about Mark Howard’s “source” is that it’s Jimmy Sexton, who is the agent to both Gus Malzahn and Tommy Tuberville.
The problem with agents leaking information is that ultimately you have to question the motive of the release. Did Sexton name drop Tuberville to Howard because he knows that David Williams is being tight-lipped with the media about the search and he wants Texas Tech to think about giving him an extension and a raise to stay? Maybe he really spoke to VU. Who knows?
I’m not going to put much faith in news broken by 104.5 hosts. We all saw how accurate George Plaster’s 48 hour prediction was when it came to Ivin Jasper…

DP helping the HC search
He’s starting with a younger demographic that has yet to become cynical about Vandy football.

On a more serious note, how much do I love that he’s visiting his nephew’s class on pajama day?
Not so sure it's going to be Franklin anymore
MD people are showing their doubts that Franklin will be leaving. Then, right on time, JC Shurburtt says he’s hearing about a mystery candidate. (http://twitter.com/jcshurburtt/status/15499137092947971). Normally I wouldn’t care about a random recruiting guy’s tweet, but some very involved people are thinking that Franklin isn’t getting the job. Combined, I’m thinking something’s up.

That said
Its still speculation. Just saying it’s a possibility.

That seems to be the building sentiment here. As you can imagine we’re all pretty happy about our coaching search turning into a fucking joke.

Maybe...
Vandy wanted to talk to Ken Niumatalolo, but he wouldn’t talk until after the Army Navy game. All of this got lost after the what’s his head fiasco, so maybe?
I watched that game.
(reaches for wallet)
Seriously, that would be a HUGE win at this point and worth all the hassle so far.

Joe Schad
James Franklin-Vanderbilt contract talks have “stalled” over money and staff issues. Not dead yet.
http://twitter.com/#!/schadjoe/statuses/15506209842925570
This has been a very public process for Franklin. I don’t think either one of Friedgen or Franklin will be happy with this arrangement anymore if Franklin returns to MD; Franklin wants his job and Friedgen doesn’t want to be forced out. I don’t know if they can coexist anymore (both have big egos). I don’t know how much leverage he has.
If the staff issue
Is he wanted to call his own plays and/or not make Herb Hand OC, then I’m glad Vandy is standing tall.
Also, we didn’t even offer the other guy 3 million, and no one else wants you to be HC, and Dan Mullen only made 1.2 million last year, so if you expect much more than that, you are ridiculous.
