Compare this year to last year at this point

And I think that unlike last season, the bench is closer to the starters in terms of ability and talent than last season, due to the maturity of LG and ST, and that KF and RO are going to be really good players sooner than later. The guys off the bench are different than the starters, but each have a quality that the starters do not have, and we are much deeper in quality depth than we were last season despite playing the same rotation overall.

The large development this season besides Festus “seeing the Matrix” is Lance figuring out how to be an effective player and putting forth a consistent level of effort that wasn’t there his first two seasons. Lance is a very highly recruited player that in most any other season would have been our top recruit, and he has the talent to really be a really effective player. He is really beginning to play within himself, and understand his strengths but perhaps more importantly, his limitations. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up starting at some point at the PF spot in the next two seasons.

LG > Walker

I know that Andre is a cool customer who doesn’t always show emotion, but am I really the only one who thinks that his heart isn’t 100 percent into it yet? I think LG probably could start over Walker.
On the other hand, I’m starting to like a Tinsley/Walker pairing and a Fuller/LG pairing. When they pressure BT, which I think we all agree he’s been really struggling with, Walker has been a great outlet for the pressure. I’ll give him that; I’m a huge fan of that part of his game. So I like those two starting off the game. Then you bring in Fuller and LG in a super high energy exciting lineup. I donno, maybe throw in Rodom in there as well…. and Thunder. Im just throwing these ideas out there. Am I way off base; what do yall think?
Bottom line, like someone said in the open game thread. This team is effing awesome and I can’t wait to follow them through the season.

Agree that LG > Walker, but...

disagree with the psychoanalysis. I seriously doubt Walker’s “heart” is not in it. Instead, I think Lance is just more talented. He started his freshman year with mono, never seemed to get in the flow of things last year (AJ), but always showed that he had plenty of talent. Big kid, who can rebound, play defense, and even shoot a bit. Walker has always been a glue guy, but Lance just has more tools.

I’d be shocked if Walker does not give us some solid performances before the season is over, but I would not be shocked to see Lance start to take some of his minutes.

Walker

I thought he played very hard against NC last night. He was peeved when he fouled out of the game. It wasn’t his best game, but he certainly got us calmed down midway through the second half.

Then, Goulbourne closed the deal with his brilliant play in the last 4 minutes.

There are plenty of minutes for both. I would assume Walker continues to start, and Goulbourne continues to see big minutes off the bench. We need ’em both.

Walker

I want to think we’re all reading into his slow start too dramatically. He hasn’t been as good as he’s proven to be in the past, and Lance’s improved rebounding and more athletic game, along with Steve’s solid play, has shifted the focus away from Bruce-Lucius. Still, even if he hasn’t improved he’s still a huge part of the team thanks to his calming influence when he’s on the floor and ability to play many different roles. His versatility will continue to be his biggest strength going forward.

Lance’s emergence will eat away at Andre’s role, but the team needs him for 20-25 mpg to maximize their potential. But they also need him to slip out of this early-season funk where he keeps disappearing from games.
