BlogPoll: Week 8 Initial Ballot
*** Each week AOG will release an initial ballot based off a highly dubious mathematical formula (think Sagarin, KenPom, or RPI). It is certain that this initial ballot will be rife with error. Keep this in mind when crafting your response. AOG's final ballot will be tweaked based on sound reasoning in the commentary. BlogPoll final ballots are due by Wednesday of each week. ***

True
I was trying to figure out why (opponent rankings based on the meta ranking at Massey Ratings):
UNLV – ranked 106.22 (out of 120) – W 41-21
San Jose St – ranked 101.54 – W 27-14
Arizona St – ranked 45.02 – W 20-19
Austin Peay – FCS – W 70-3 <— doesn’t help that much in my rankings… all FCS (for simplicity) are factored at a ranking of 140
Michigan St – ranked 9.73 – L 24-34
Minnesota – ranked 99.32 – W 41-23
Ohio St – ranked 14.09 – W 31-18
There is no factor for home/away yet.
SEC Breakdown
07 Auburn
08 LSU
12 Alabama
20 South Carolina
24 Arkansas
26 Mississippi State
32 Florida
48 Georgia
56 Kentucky
66 Mississippi
79 Tennessee
87 Vanderbilt
The problem with computers...
is that they place too much emphasis on wins against lower ranked teams. Humans, conversely, place the most emphasis on wins against higher ranked teams. What matters more for Auburn? A close win over Kentucky (somewhat vindicated after the SC game) or a solid win over Arkansas? In my opinion, it’s the latter, but I’m guessing the computer formula disagrees.
I’ll be interested to see how the rankings hold as conference play shakes itself out. Mizzou-OU and LSU-Auburn could make thinks very interesting. Regardless, Utah currently has no business as a top 5 team – and it’s unfortunate that a computer could not watch them play Pittsburgh (their only semi-decent opponent so far this year).
