SOS - It's Not Even Close
You have to wonder how well the strategy of playing so many cupcakes prepares you for the postseason…
Our SOS will take a hit between Illinois and the start of SEC play. Conversely, Kentucky will shoot way up after playing UNC, UConn, and Louisville. Memphis and Kansas should help out Tennessee. Syracuse and a road trip to NC State will help out Florida.
Sadly, all East teams will take a big hit when they have to play the SEC West. Arkansas is 2-5 – though I still would not bet on us to beat them in Fayetteville.
Pardon the Ignorance of Knowing how SOS is calculated
But is it based off the teams you’ve played in the past, or is it based on the current performance of the teams on your schedule?
Great point
You’re right. The three top teams in the East are about to get tested big time. I guess its time to start rooting for them so our victories/losses to them look a lot better in March.
It has to be based on teams you’ve played in the past. No SEC team will end up with a SOS ranked that low, simply because all SEC teams play each other. According to CBSSports.com SOS rankings, Gardner-Webb currently is ranked #1. I can’t imagine that is based on its Big South schedule.
If I have the time, I’ll run through the various SEC non-conference schedules and give a breakdown on the number of 0-99 tier teams, 100-199 tier teams, 200-299 tier teams, and 300+ tier teams on each schedule.
I still have a feeling that Vandy will have fewer poorly ranked teams than the rest of the SEC teams. It will be interesting to see if that feeling is a reality or not.
Ok, Just Wanted to Be Sure
That would explain the massive disparity in SOS between us and the rest of the SEC teams. I’ve actually never thought about how SOS is calculated and obviously it fluctuates so that makes the most sense.
