Can't Wait

Stallings is always so brutally honest. Hopefully the callers will give him some good questions.

On Leadership

Quiet basketball team
Quiet guys
Very mannerly, well raised, proper good people
Difficult to lead vocally when you are quiet by nature
Jermaine leading by example
Guys follow his lead
Week stretch where his play was not indicative of the example we need from our only senior
Beal to coach: never been under the microscope from you so much
Coach to Beal: we need you to be successful for us to be successful
Beal was out of the game when they scored 14 points in 3 minutes

Assist to TO Ratio Being Low

Reason for low number: Too many TOs!
Assist numbers down:
  Not made many jumpshots
Jenkins only shooting close to % he, beal, tinsley are capable of
Up until last 2 games, getting fouled so much (missing FG), make points at foul line, takes away an assist
  Bad play, poor passes

Brad Tinsley

Brad is passing up looks he needs to take. It’s in his head.
Was an efficient scorer last season, first time in his life he’s not been efficient, must play through it.
Need to get him back to being Brad.

Brad, Jermaine, and John have earned in practice the right to shoot.

If he likes to see them shoot (in practice), they get the green light.

Question about leadership being an evaluation in the recruiting process

You can’t really get a sense of how good a leader he can be, how coachable a kid can be, until you get them.

Structure of recruiting prevents this.

Sometimes you get tricked by guys.

A leader budding as we speak: Jeffery Taylor! Ways he goes about practicing, competes, distaste for losing, willingness to say things to teammates starting to impact our team positively. Sometimes to be a leader you have to be confrontational. Andre, Darshawn starting as well. Fes and Steve are biggest encouragers. Great energy guys…

Jeff not afraid to call somebody out. He’s not afraid to be called out. Coaches are going to try to help enable him in this regard.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS, though perhaps a bit expected.

You have leaders by encouragement, by example, but you need a leader who is willing to be confrontational.

On John being more a part of our offense

Learning how to cut
Learning how to use screens
They have to protect him some from the fans
John needs to be getting the ball with more space
Has done a great job so far.

Large Sophomore Class - Possibility of Reshirt Before Season

Stallings was in favor of redshirting a guy – it was discussed. Entire staff was against. Decided not to go down that path.

Scheduling

Different challenges by scheduling different teams

St Marys – tough road game
Maui – tournament games
WKU – game at Arena, where SEC Tourney will be
Going into the game yesterday, 8th toughest schedule in the country.

Put the team through the fire so far
Other teams have nicer records (maybe they have their tough games upcoming)

Goal is to overachieve. Play above what our talents say that they should. Not gotten to that point.
Some things have to happen:
  Make shots
  Take care of the ball
  Rebound

Have to get to the point where their sum is greater than the sum of their parts.

Sky is not falling

Cincinnati/Illinois – toss up games.
Western Kentucky is a should win game.

Considers us to be -1 at this point. Not the end of the world. Wants to be gelling at a higher level than what they are now
Hopes to end this run prior to SEC play on good note.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless

FILE -- This is an Oct. 18, 2008 file photo showing Connecticut corner back Jasper Howard (6) trying to get the crowd into the game during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against Rutgers, in Piscataway, N.J. Jasper Howard had his little sisters' names tatooed on his chest. His friends say it was a constant reminder of why he was at U Conn _ to provide his family with a better life than the one he had in Miami's Little Haiti. (AP Photo/Mel Evans, File) link
